The Kraaifontein school design responds to the need for safe school environments in Cape Town by forming a visually responsive urban envelope around the site, with safe and structured play areas inside.

Passive surveillance is utilised throughout the school to strengthen safety both internally and externally.

Scale, natural features, familiar textures and bright colours are also used to create a sense of order and home for the learners.

This school is a candid example of how infrastructure and resources can empower citizens.

The school, under the leadership of their principal, has embraced the “second chance” approach, seeing pass rates improve from 23% to 80% in two years.
